There are three main characters in this book: Naomi the widow, Ruth the Moabite, and Boaz the Israelite farmer. Their story is told in four chapters that are beautifully designed. Let's dive in and see what unfolds.

 
The Big Idea

God’s grand story of redemption for all creation can be found in seemingly mundane events: tragedy, integrity in the face of opposition, and generosity. The book of Ruth invites us to consider how God might be at work in our lives.

Who Wrote the Book of Ruth?

The book of Ruth does not explicitly name its author, though Ruth is one of the three main characters of the story.

Context

The events surrounding the book of Ruth take place during the ruling of the Judges, sometime after the Israelites enter the promised land but before David’s reign.

Structure

Ruth is divided into four parts. Chapter 1 introduces Naomi and Ruth in the midst of catastrophe. Chapter 2 details Ruth and Boaz meeting. Chapter 3 follows Naomi’s plan for Ruth to marry Boaz. Chapter 4 concludes with a marriage and the birth of a son.
