I prefer the KJV, the King James Version personally. It is like reading Shakespeare. It is absolutely beautiful. However, everyone cannot understand Shakespeare, and when you do not understand or comprehend what you are reading, then that is a problem.
I would also suggest getting a word for word translation as well as a thought for thought translation, and during study compare the two. Then after awhile of studying the word and comparing the two, the more you can appreciate the word for word translations and understand them.
You must remember that the original Bible was not written in English. It was written in Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic. In certain translations, some of the words are mistranslated. That is why it is critical to read it, compare it, and do research.
One example of mistranslation is:
The use of the word rape in place of the Hebrew תּפשׂ (taphas) in Deuteronomy 22:28 is a poor translation on the part of those involved with the NIV and other translations. This Hebrew word taphas means “to lay hold of, grab, or handle.” If Moses had wanted to unambiguously state rape here, he could have done so easily with either חזק (chazaq as in verse 25) or ענה (‘anah as in Genesis 34:2), both of which can carry the connotation of rape (prevail upon, force, become strong). Because he did not use that word, what is likely being referred to here is consensual relations before marriage (fornication). The added phrase “and they are found” adds weight to this interpretation as does “seduces” in Exodus 22:16.
When a female attempts to learn the Bible and reads that it is okay to rape and marry then of course she is going to turn away. How could she believe in a God that was okay with her and other women being raped. She would be correct to question this. HOWEVER, the translation does not mean rape. Do you know how many people turn away for things just like this. Trust me when I say, God loves you very much and would never be okay, nor would HE contribute to your suffering.
